イギリスのゲームデベロッパー Core Design が開発したゲームソフト『トゥームレイダー』シリーズが原作。
2009年から2022年までスクウェア・エニックスが『トゥームレイダー』シリーズの知的財産を所有していた。Core Design Limited は1996年4月に Eidos Interactive Limited に買収され、Eidos Interactive Limited は2009年11月にスクウェア・エニックスに買収され Square Enix Europe (法人名 Square Enix Limited) となった。2022年5月スクウェア・エニックスは、『トゥームレイダー』シリーズを含む Square Enix Europe の資産をスウェーデンのゲーム持株会社 Embracer Group に売却すると発表した。
アクション・アドベンチャー映画。
続編にヤン・デ・ボン監督『トゥームレイダー2』(2003)がある。
ローアル・ユートハウグ監督『トゥームレイダー ファースト・ミッション』(2018)というリブートがある。アリシア・ヴィキャンデル主演。スクウェア・エニックスが製作会社の1社。
続編を開発していたが実現せず。MGMの映画化権が失効し、複数の映画会社で争奪戦の模様。

感想
何度観てもおもしろい。
アンジェリーナ・ジョリーとジョン・ヴォイトの親子共演。
サイモン・ウェスト監督が脚本でもクレジットされている。
"Adaptation by" が使用されることは少ない。脚本家同士でクレジットについてもめた際に、全米脚本家組合が裁定を行う。
全米脚本家組合は "Adaptation by" についてこう定義している。
In the interest of avoiding a multiplicity of credits, the Guild is opposed to the general use of the "Adaptation by" credit. However, the Guild recognizes that there are certain unusual cases where credit is due a writer who shapes the direction of screenplay construction without qualifying for "Screenplay by" credit. In those special cases, and only as a result of arbitration, the "Adaptation by" credit may be used.
脚本の方向性を決めたものの "Screenplay by" の基準を満たさなかった場合に、裁定を経て特別にクレジットされることがある。
