感想

映画館に観に行った。おもしろい。

アラン・メンケンによる劇伴、アラン・メンケン、ハワード・アッシュマン、リン＝マニュエル・ミランダによるミュージカルナンバーがいい。

アリエルは黒人か否かという命題は置いておく。ハリー・ベイリーは歌は上手いが、演技は下手。感情芝居ができていない。

メリッサ・マッカーシーのアースラは素晴らしい。二次元のディズニーヴィランを上手に三次元に落とし込んだ。

ハビエル・バルデムのトリトン王もいい。ハビエル・バルデムは、ジョエル・コーエン&イーサン・コーエン兄弟監督・脚本・製作『ノーカントリー・フォー・オールドメン』(2007)のサイコパスのような演技を見ているので、破天荒な子どもに頭を悩ませる子煩悩な父親役が新鮮だった。

アリエルの姉たちが様々な人種になっている。七つの海に合わせたのだろう。

原作のアニメーション映画では舞台装置だったエリック王子が、民のことを考えたり、見識を広めたいと考えていたり、遠い地への冒険を夢見たりと掘り下げられていた点がよかった。

セリーナ女王とエリック王子が養子による家族という設定改変には驚いた。世襲君主制なのに血統主義ではないのかと。まあ現実でも君主に子どもがいない場合には、兄弟姉妹などの親族から選ぶか親族内で養子縁組するなどして後継者を作る事例は多々あった。黒人女王と白人王子なのでおそらく血縁関係はなさそう。

NHKは2025年2月にディズニー・ルネサンスの4作品を放送していた。ジョン・マスカー監督&ロン・クレメンツ監督『リトル・マーメイド』(1989)は、NHK BSが2025年2月21日19:00-20:23に放送した。

水(流体)はCGIで難しいものの1つ。『リトル・マーメイド』は海中のシークエンスが半分以上ある。この映画のCGIはよくできている。

その一方で、セバスチャンとフランダーのキャラクターデザインが気持ち悪い。フォトリアルにすればいいというものではない。西洋では実写作品にはデフォルメさせたキャラクターは合わないという固定観念・先入観があるようだ。

VFXスーパーバイザーのティム・バークは、『ハリー・ポッター』シリーズと『ファンタスティック・ビースト』シリーズでVFXスーパーバイザーを長年務めていた。

リドリー・スコット監督『グラディエーター』(2000)でアカデミー視覚効果賞を受賞した。

現在は、マテルの玩具『マスターズ・オブ・ユニバース』を原作とするトラヴィス・ナイト監督『マスターズ・オブ・ユニバース』(2026)のVFXスーパーバイザーを務めている。
