感想
いい映画。
18世紀から20世紀後半にかけて、カトリック教会には「不適切」な行いをした女性を監禁し労働させる施設があったらしい。多数の性的関係を持つ女性、売春する女性、未婚の母、親から捨てられた少女などが入れられていた。
Magdalene asylum という施設の名前はマグダラのマリアからとっているのだろう。『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』はカトリック教会が、イエス・キリストと結婚し子を成したマグダラのマリアを貶めたとしている。
修道院 Sean Ross Abbey とその運営母体の修道会 The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary は現在も存在する。
フィロミナ・リーの息子マイケル・ヘス(Michael A. Hess)は弁護士になり、共和党全国委員会のジェネラルカウンセルを務めた。共和党は同性愛を否定しているため、ゲイであることで苦しんだ。
主人公の名前は聖フィロメナにちなむ。
同じ題材を描いた映画として、ピーター・マラン監督・脚本『マグダレンの祈り』(2002)がある。
