"The Mummy" フランチャイズのリブートで、『ダーク・ユニバース』第1作として、アレックス・カーツマン監督・製作『ザ・マミー 呪われた砂漠の王女』(2017)を製作したが、北米の興行収入で失敗したためシネマティック・ユニバース構想は中止された。トム・クルーズ主演。
製作費 $125-195 million に対して、北米の興行収入は $80.2 million、世界の興行収入は $410 million。ハリウッドは北米の興収を成功・失敗の指標として重視しているので、北米でコケると続編やシリーズ化は厳しい。製作費の計算手法にも幅があり、仮に $195 million だったとすると世界でも興行的に失敗になる。

感想
何度観てもおもしろい。
日本テレビ版吹き替えはBDに収録されていないので貴重。
紀元前3000年頃の古代エジプトが舞台。『ハムナプトラ』シリーズの5000年前の設定。
ドウェイン・ジョンソンが演じるキャラクターは、敵と戦って倒しはしても、仲間や味方に暴力を振るわない印象があった。けれど本作のマサイアスはアーピッドを何度も殴る。それが残念だ。
『ハムナプトラ2』のスコーピオン・キングは映画史上最低のVFX(CGI)の1つによく挙げられている。
確かにあれは、モデリング、テクスチャーペインティング、コンポジティング(ライティング)が低品質だった。
チャック・ラッセル監督とジョン・R・レオネッティ撮影監督は『マスク』(1994)を一緒に製作した。ジム・キャリー、キャメロン・ディアス主演。
余談
アメリカのプロレス団体・興行会社 WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.) は、かつて WWF (World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc.) という名称だった。世界自然保護基金 (World Wide Fund for Nature) に名称変更を求める訴訟を起こされ敗訴したため、2002年に名称変更した。世界自然保護基金は "WWF" を世界各国で商標登録している。
実は経緯はもっと複雑だった。1994年当時 Titan Sports, Inc. という社名だった WWE は、世界自然保護基金と、 "WWF" という略称を使用する契約を結んだ。Titan Sports は、"WWF" という略称表記をプロレス興行に関連づけて使用しないこと、またテレビ放送で音声による "WWF" という言葉の使用を最小限に抑えることに同意した。代わりに世界自然保護基金は、Titan Sports への訴訟を取り下げること、またフルスペルの "World Wrestling Federation" や1994年当時のロゴの使用を認めることに同意した。
2000年、世界自然保護基金は、1994年の契約を守っていないとして World Wrestling Federation Entertainment Inc. を提訴した。イギリスの控訴院(最高裁判所に次ぐ第2の上級裁判所)は、世界自然保護基金の訴えを認めた。
