感想
動物と話せるという設定はいいが、物語は映画向きではない。小説だから成立していた。
コメディ演出は子ども向け。子どもが笑えるなら成功している。大人向けではない。
ドリトルは、ヴィクトリア女王を診療することになる。そして治療に必要な薬を探しに旅に出る。
ロアルド・ダールの『オ・ヤサシ巨人BFG』でもエリザベス女王に謁見し、巨人退治に協力してもらう。スティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督・製作、メリッサ・マシスン脚本『BFG: ビッグ・フレンドリー・ジャイアント』(2016)。
ドリトルの亡き妻リリーの父であるラソーリ王はドリトルを恨んでいたが和解した。
「エデンの樹の果実」を守っているドラゴンを治療すると、お礼に果実をくれた。
トーマス・バッジリー卿がヴィクトリア女王を毒殺し王位簒奪しようとしていた。
リチャード・フライシャー監督『ドリトル先生不思議な旅』(1967)というミュージカル映画がある。
原作とは別物だけど、エディ・マーフィ主演のベティ・トーマス監督『ドクター・ドリトル』(1998)及びスティーヴ・カー監督『ドクター・ドリトル2』(2001)はおもしろい。

動物のCGIアニメーションは、ジョン・ファヴロー監督・製作『ジャングル・ブック』(2016)と『ライオン・キング』(2019)で多くのVFX賞を受賞したMPCがメインベンダーとして担当した。
製作
『ドクター・ドリトル』(2020)は制作において困難に見舞われた作品。
試写会での評価が悪かったため、2019年4月に再撮影が21日間行われた。
スティーヴン・ギャガン監督はもともとシリアスなドラマ映画で評価された脚本家なので、初期の編集版ではファミリー映画に見えなかった。コメディ要素がなかったのだ。
初期の編集版ではコメディに失敗していたため、クリス・マッケイ監督が脚本やストーリーボードに大幅に手を入れた。
クリス・マッケイ監督は『トゥモロー・ウォー』(2021)のスケジュールの都合で再撮影まで面倒を見られなかったので、再撮影ではジョナサン・リーベスマン監督がスティーヴン・ギャガン監督を手助けした。
また、再撮影の最中に John Whittington が脚本を書き直した(rewrite)。
2019年10月13日公開の予告編では John Whittington がクレジットされているが、2020年1月3日公開の予告編では Dan Gregor & Doug Mand の脚本家チームに変更されている。
2019年8月、映画の題名が "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle" から "Dolittle" に変更された。
ロバート・ダウニー・Jr.とスーザン・ダウニー夫妻がクリエイティブの権限を持っていたので、ベテランプロデューサーのジョー・ロスやジェフ・キルシェンバウム、ユニバーサル・ピクチャーズ幹部にできることは少なかったようだ。
一方、映画をなんとか完成させられたのはジョー・ロスとスーザン・ダウニーであり、ロバート・ダウニー・Jr.はプロデューサーとしてそこまで口出ししていないという情報もある。
また、『ドクター・ドリトル』を担当していたユニバーサル・ピクチャーズ幹部は、トラブル続きのポストプロダクション中に退職した。
トラブルに見舞われたプロジェクトではあるが、ロバート・ダウニー・Jr.、ジョナサン・リーベスマン監督、スティーヴン・ギャガン監督の関係は良好だった。
『ドクター・ドリトル』(2020)は「船頭多くして船山に登る」だったようだ。
